Confidence is something which we gain through experience over time and with this our own self belief develops.

From my own experiences I’d like to give you four small and simple steps to helping you to build your own self confidence.

Be Brave

Whether its day or night walk with a good posture and hold your head with pride. Those who walk with an uncomfortable stance will project an unconfident and vulnerable image to others. Those who stride with confidence are less likely to be questioned.

Learn to Laugh

Learn to laugh. A good friend of mine who recently spoke about confidence building at one of our Hot Candys events spoke about the power of humour.

Whilst out one day out dressed and being approached by a group of young people who jeered ‘your a man in a dress arn’t you?’ she replied well I certainly hope so, and laughed back at them! At her crisp honesty and wit the group didn’t know how to react and soon afterwards left her alone. So girls, learn to laugh as the power of humour is not only a good means of communication but also an invaluable tool.

Feel Good Secrets

Wear what makes you feel good! Sounds quite self explanatory I know but seriously its the little things. Potty as it sounds I have two things that help me, my ‘special’ perfume (ok ok its Chanel Chance) and my blue lacy knickers! Every time I wore my blue knickers good things happened…I got job interviews…won money on the lottery…lost weight etc so when I was having a rubbish week I used to wear them to cheer me up and boost my confidence! The perfume is one I wear to important meetings, exhibitions and special nights out like the theatre or orchestra, so again when I was feeling like I needed a little confidence boost I’d wear it. Immediately the smell would make me feel like I was in a position of calm and control and with that I felt more confident. So it could be anything, a piece of music, a favourite drink or place to eat but do it. It’s all the little things that help.

Be Safe

This point I’d like to emphasise the most girls.

Its simple and straightforward but stay safe. This doesn’t mean that you have to stay in but if your going out then plan journeys beforehand. Research new areas and cities and be aware of trans friendly venues and areas. Make sure you always have a taxi number of a local firm packed with your lippy; and don’t forget to play safe too!

At Hot Candys we do encourage our girls (and boys) to add any trans friendly venues, business’s and places to go to our website so if you have any recommendations then please feel free to add them wherever they are in the country!

The popularity of our previous Hot Candys events has led to a surge in enquiries about our White Wedding evening planned for December.

To make it the best crossdressing event possible we’ve taken the bold decision to delay the event until March 2010 and make it a Springtime Wedding of Brides and Belles – This will then give us a chance to step the whole event up a notch or three!

The evening started with a performance by the darling Pequilia Bigtopp (appearing as as Magenta) backed by our band, The Satanic Mechanics.

In our popular “Stepping out” section we had Donna talking to us about wigs – all the dos and dont’s when buying, styling, wearing and altering them.

Donna has many years experience in wig styling and works closely with Hot Candys so if you do have any questions about this contact us.

The evening then followed with The duet and floorshow featuring Joe Ballard as Frankenfurter accompanied by Pequilia, and much audience participation.

Before the Timewarp began we had our Best Dressed Catwalk competition, which the glamorous and cheeky Nicole deservedly won – being rewarded a large round of applause and some pink fizzy!

The Miss Rose of the year competition

After a sumptuous evening meal  The Miss Rose of the year competition took place -  which myself and Christy, my trusty colleague, were honoured to be asked by Martine to sit on the Judges panel – I even got to read out the winners!

I can only hazard a guess though at how many outfits some of the girls brought as I kept bumping into the same faces over the course of the evening  who must have changed several times!! Yes girls you know who you are!!!

It was also a pleasure to meet Grayson Perry who was much fun, too in her many different outfits ranging from her sweet ‘Alice’ style look with matching dolly through to her quirky pvc number at the end of the evening!

Because we love being helpful we’ve put this post together to take you through the basics of finding the right eyeliner for you.

The two most commonly used types of eyeliner are:

• Eyeliner Pencil

  We suggest starting out with the Eyeliner pencil which is easier to apply, until you have perfected your technique

• Liquid eyeliner

  This can be tricky to apply, requiring a steady hand for smooth application – but with some practice it offers great results.

It is always best to test eyeliners before you buy although this can often be difficult in many stores.  It’s also best to avoid the cheapest products as these can often be waxy or oily, making them difficult to apply and limiting their ability to stay on once hot.

Liquid eyeliners come with two main types of applicators:

• Brush applicator

  Cheaper liquid eyeliners tend to come with brush applicators – they work but can be tricky to use

• Curved end felt tip pen style applicator

  A curved pen style applicator can be mastered, with a bit of practice, for small flicks at the side of the eyes relatively quickly

Application

• Pencil eyeliners can be used for both above the top and bottom lashes, where as liquid eyeliner can only be used on the top lid.
• For a more subtle, softer look instead of using a pencil try using a small makeup brush with a dark eyeshadow.
• Apply above and below lashes to make the eyes appear wider and slightly smoky.
• For a slightly lengthened look draw this line our towards the ends of the eyes.

Always choose the right neckline for your frame

The Halter Neck A dress with a halter neck will tend to enhance shoulders, this can be balanced if worn with a sheer scarf draped over the shoulders and / or long gloves
Dipped Neckline A softer, dipped neckline or a slighter deeper, curved neckline on a sleeved dress will balance the shape and give a more even sillouette. For a classy look choose a dress with stretch lace or mesh sleeves, this way you get the figure balance and also have that added sexy chic to your look.
High Neckline For a real diva look choose a dress with a high neckline but avoid this if you have a short neck. Choose high neck dresses with sleeves and individual detail for balance. You can check out our high necked velvet dress in the shop (also available in Black!)

Choosing the right length dress for your look

Short does not always have to mean tarty but if your after classy and short head for something that falls between the knee and mid thigh – REMEMBER you must allow for sitting down, unless you want everyone in the restaurant to see your knickers!

If you’re looking for a long dress then make sure you choose the right length and ALLOW for heels.
Theres nothing more dissapointing than a long dress which ends up sitting mid calf!

Practice makes perfect!

So banish that myth that some of us were just born with style – its simply practice and knowing which shapes and styles work for you.
Its about showing off all those hottie bits and hiding all those nottie bits!!

After many years of working in the fashion industry in London I have seen many a fashion disaster.  Looking good does not necessarily mean following high fashion its about showing off what you love and hiding what you loathe

Once you know you are looking good and feeling gorgeous your confidence will simply soar.

Ruth’s chosen to hold the event in The Octagon Studio at the Norwich Puppet Theatre.

“I wanted to create another space aside from The Catherine Wheel and The Castle, where the girls would feel safe and comfortable and also somewhere which is quirky.

I chose the Octagon Studio for it’s intimate feel and great character.  It’ll be a fantastic night!”

Event Features

We’ll give you make up advice and tips, demonstrate application techniques and have a whole lot of fun to boot!

Pequilia Bigtopp (pictured) will be there, and she’ll be performing a few tunes for us.

Katy Jon Went will be making a presentation on confidence building and telling her story of stepping out, and inviting other to share their experiences.

We will also have a raffle with beauty prizes, games to break the ice and also nibbles!

There will be a changing area available at the theatre so anyone who would feel more comfortable getting changed upon arrival is most welcome to.

• The venue: The Octagon Studio at the Norwich Puppet Theatre
• Doors open: 7.00pm (giving you a chance to park, get dressed up and catch your breath!)
• Event start: 8.00pm
• Event ends: 11.00pm

There is a full bar at the theatre and parking available which although pretty small can park up to 10 cars … but there is an NCP car park just round the corner if needed!

The theatre is not open for any other performances that night so the space will be exclusive to Hot Candys.

There will be a changing area available at the theatre so anyone who would feel more comfortable getting changed upon arrival is most welcome to.

There is a surcharge of 50p per booking on card payments or £1.00 for posted tickets. All tickets are non refundable unless the evening is cancelled by Hot Candys or The Puppet Theatre. These can otherwise be collected on the evening.
